Show Jumping Rules

All classes run two phase, with the exception of the Lead Rein class, which is one round timed.  Riders achieving a clear round go straight into a timed second round (or jump off).  Riders with faults do not go on to the second round.

Clear round limited to one entry per combination, although if time permitting a second clear round may be possible.

Adults riding ponies must compete in Horse classes.

Eligibility Rules Summary  (See BRC 2025 Rule Book for full rules.)

70 cm class* – No BE or BE Foundation points, no BS points or BS Club points gained at 90 cm or above and riders not to have completed at BE100 or BRC 100 in the current or previous year.

80 cm class* – No more than 5 BE points or 75 BS points.

90 cm class* – No more than 20 BE points or 500 BS points.

100 cm class* – No more than 60 BE points or 999 BS points.

Notional points gained in 70 cm and 80 cm classes held at BS Intro Shows do not count.  BS Club points gained at any level will not be counted except for 70 cm SJ.

Riders who have completed under FEI rules and horses that have competed at BE90 or above – please check BRC Rule Book for eligibility.

JUNIOR COMBINATIONS (pony AND rider) with points in excess of those listed above may compete at Stranraer & District RC show jumping events at 70 cm and above.

Any horse/rider combination that has won four firsts in the same class (50 cm, 60 cm or 70 cm) during the current and preceding season, which has four or more entries in the class, must move up to the next height class. 

Only one horse/pony and rider combination may compete in the same class.  Another rider may compete later in the class HC.  Lead Rein Class and Let Loose only – up to 3 riders may compete on the same pony.

Dress code as per British Riding Club rules.  At Club Show Jumping competitions Smart Riding / Show Jackets or Tweed Jackets are permitted, along with S&DRC sweatshirt or jacket.  BS (British Showjumping) jackets and hoodies are not permitted.

Spurs not to be worn by Junior members unless the Club’s pro forma is completed by a qualified instructor, accredited coach or Pony Club DC and submitted to the Secretary.

Summer Points League will again run this year, over all show jumping dates – including Combined Training competitions.  Points League Trophies will be presented for each individual show jumping class at the Club’s Annual General Meeting at the end of the season.

Castlefields Training

Something new for 2025 – two days of training (two sessions each day) from great instructors plus the TopSpec weighbridge on the Saturday. 

The weekend is not residential and there are no stables – hence “Day Camp”.  However, we have lots planned and hope that you will wish to join us for this first ever Stranraer & District Riding Club Day Camp.

INCLUDED:

  • One hour group session (maximum of three in group) with Debbie Rodwell (Saturday)
  • Half hour one on one Pole Clinic with Kara Bolik (Saturday)
  • One hour group session (maximum of three in group) with David Gatherer (Sunday)
  • One hour group session (maximum of three in group) with Ruth McGarry (Sunday)
  • TopSpec weighbridge on site on the Saturday
  • Use of show jumps in arena during training sessions
  • Use of Working Hunter Jumps in field during training sessions
  • Use of warm up area
  • Jumping Heights from x poles to 110 cm
  • Flat work only training if you don’t wish to jump
  • Tea/coffee and snacks will be available for a donation

There will be one lesson in the morning and one in the afternoon on each day.

During the lunch break there will be a talk from TopSpec on Saturday.  On Sunday Heather McMeikan of Horse and Soul Equine Massage and Rehabilitation Therapy will give a demonstration.

Participants will be able to bring along rugs, tack, etc to sell – price up items in advance and committee members will look after while you are training.

Spectators welcome – come along and join us for an hour or two, or all day.

Riders will have the opportunity to learn from expert coaches and have fun with like-minded people.

It doesn’t matter if you are a happy hacker, just starting out, have a young horse or compete affiliated – our trainers will tailor the camp to suit your needs.  Riders will be split into groups according to their experience and jumping height.

PHOTOGRAPHS:  Official photographs and video will be taken at this event and may be published on websites, social media or in other publications.  If you do not want your image(s) to be used, please inform the event secretary in advance of the event.

At check-out you will be asked to give your consent for your photographs and video footage to be used by the club in printed, online or electronic publications, which may be shared publicly.  Examples of these materials include, but are not limited to: posters, leaflets, brochures, adverts, emails, e-newsletters, blogs, web pages, social media posts, presentations, speeches, research or policy reports and press releases or other materials.

  • All riders are responsible for ensuring the safety of themselves and others.
  • All riders must have previous experience of riding the horse they are bringing.
  • Always ride, with courtesy, care and consideration to fellow participants.
  • Dogs are allowed, however must be kept under control on a lead at all times.
  • Dog poop to be picked up and put in the bin.
  • Rubbish to be placed in bins or taken home.
  • Horse droppings to be lifted and taken home.

Riders

  • Hats to the current BRC standard must be worn.
  • Body protectors, if worn, should comply with current BRC standard.
  • Suitable riding footwear must be worn – no trainers or wellies.
  • Under 18s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian whilst on site.

Please bring your own food and feed for your horse.  Mains water available on site.

Horses / Ponies

  • All equines must be five years old and over and sufficiently fit to undertake the activity being undertaken.  Four year old equines may be accepted – please contact Jane to discuss.
  • Hooves and shoes, if worn, must be in good condition.
  • Stallions not permitted, unless agreed in advance.
  • Tack must be in safe condition and fit correctly – you should check before attending
  • You are responsible for any damage caused by your horse to any facilities whilst on site and will be liable for the cost of replacing / repairing.

Cost of Camp:                

Booked by 15th June:  Members = £95 / Non Members = £130

Booked after 15th June:  Members = £105 / Non Members = £140

The cost for S&DRC members is being subsidised by the Club and Wigtownshire Sports Council.

Prices below are for bookings made by 15th June.  Final payment will increase by £10 for bookings made after 15th June.

  • A £20 non-refundable deposit to book a place must be paid by 15th June 2025.
  • A payment of £40 (£55 non-members) to be paid by 30th June.
  • A final payment £35 (£55 non-members) to be paid by 31st July.

Alternatively, the full amount can be paid when booking.  Places are limited so don’t delay.

Anyone not paying the correct amount by the due date will lose their place and will not receive any refund, unless their place can be taken up.  The amount of any refund depends on the amount already paid and excludes the non-refundable deposit in all circumstances.

CANCELLATION POLICY

If you need to cancel due to a medical or veterinary reason a certificate will be required and 80% of the amount paid may be refunded, subject to whether the space can be filled.

Full refund (minus non-refundable deposit) if space filled.

INSTRUCTORS FOR THE WEEKEND

Debbie Rodwell    (Saturday)

Debbie is a BHS Stage 4 Senior Coach with over 30 years’ experience in the horse industry.  Debbie’s main interest is eventing having competed up to CCI 1* (now 2*) in the past and now competes at Grassroots level, having qualified for Badminton a couple of years ago.  Debbie has also competed at BD, BS, working hunter, showing and has even had a go at polo and driving.

Debbie has a lot to offer to grassroots riders wanting to lay down the correct foundations in order be able to progress.  She is interested in rider and horse biomechanics and continues to learn as much as possible in this area, hoping to help riders produce happy and sound horses and ponies for any discipline.

Kara Bolik  (Saturday)

Kara is a BHS Stage 3 Coach and is available to help all combinations, both adults and children, to achieve their best and enjoy the process.  Kara prides herself on being encouraging and especially in helping clients build confidence.   Kara has competed in all disciplines – BD, BE, BS & BRC.

Kara will be running her famous one on one 30 minute polework sessions.

David Gatherer  (Sunday)

David is a very experienced and popular BE accredited coach and competitor, competing in all disciplines including Eventing up to 4* level.  David coaches all over Scotland and was Scotland’s coach of the year in 2015.  David has produced many young horses, introducing them to eventing and moving them up the levels.

David has ridden at 4 star-level and competed in major competitions such as Chatsworth, Blair Castle and Bramham International.  Equally talented in the discipline of dressage, he has ridden at Prix St Georges level and produced winning performances at national championships.

David is passionate about providing a framework of education for riders and coaches by implementing BE’s training strategies in conjunction with their regional training committee.

Ruth McGarry   (Sunday)

Ruth is a BHS Stage 3 Coach and offers instruction for all ages on your own horse or pony.  Ruth teaches individual clients, pony club and riding club from beginners to advanced.  She specialises in young and problem horses as well as working the rider through confidence issues to achieve the best horse and rider combination.

Working Hunter and Showing Clinic…

Working Hunter and Showing Clinic on Sunday 1st June 2025

with Lilian Cloy at Castlefields, Castle Kennedy, DG9 8SQ

Get ready for the upcoming show season.  Clinic open to all.

Book a place on the Working Hunter and Showing Clinic with the very successful Lilian Cloy.

Lilian will offer advice on turnout, which classes are suitable for you and your horse/pony as well as ringcraft.  There will be tips and information on the go round, what the judge is looking for and the individual show along with the opportunity to jump a Working Hunter course of jumps.  Showing only sessions also available (no jumping).  Heights from X poles to 90 cm.

Lilian has competed and won at the Horse of the Year Show, Royal International Horse Show, the Royal Highland Show and Great Yorkshire show to name a few.  Lilian has extensive experience in showing from Show Hunter Ponies, Working Hunter (ponies and horses) and Hunters.

You can come wearing your showing outfit, plaited or unplaited, or dress in ordinary riding gear, depending on the feedback you are seeking.

One hour group sessions – up to four riders.

Times will be between 10 am and 3 pm (approximately).  Please advise if there is a particular time you wish and we will try to accommodate (although this cannot be guaranteed).

Castle Kennedy Charity Horse Show is organised by the remaining members of the Castle Kennedy Horse Driving Trials committee.  We are grateful to Stranraer & District Riding Club for allowing us to run the Charity Show and Show Jumping events at the Club.

The trophies presented at the Charity Show and Show Jumping events were originally presented at the Castle Kennedy Horse Driving Trials and the events are held in memory of Dr John Calvert.

TROPHIES:  Due to trophies not being returned in time and some being returned in poor condition and unable to be presented on the day we have regretfully taken the decision that the championship trophies will no longer be able to be taken home by the winners.  Opportunities for winners to take photographs on the day will be available.  Anyone wishing to take one of the other trophies home will be able to do so, on payment of a £40 deposit which will be refunded when the trophy is returned in advance of the next Charity Show.

Caledonian Showing Championships

This show is a qualifier for the Caledonian Showing Championships, which is now fully established as the biggest and best way to end Scottish showing season

This year’s show will be held at:   Howe EC, near Ladybank, Fife on 17/18/19 October 2025

Every horse and pony placed 1st in all In hand, Ridden Showing classes (not fun classes) and Working Hunter/Pony classes will qualify to compete in any appropriate class at the Finals. All Champions & Reserves will qualify for the Champion & Reserves Stakes Finals.  Qualification will be from placings, no qualification cards will be awarded in the ring, and no qualification can go down the line.

Class 33   Ridden Ring Experience – Ponies.  Mare or gelding, 4 years old or over.  Walk and trot only.  Snaffle bit, no spurs or whips.  Class is for ponies / riders that genuinely seek ring experience with no canter go round or in the individual show.  Combinations in this class may only enter additional classes in this section (not Ring 1 or Ring 2 classes).

Class 34   Ridden Ring Experience – Horses.  Mare or gelding, 4 years old or over.  Walk and trot only.  Snaffle bit, no spurs or whips.  Class is for horses / riders that genuinely seek ring experience with no canter go round or in the individual show.  Combinations in this class may only enter additional classes in this section (not Ring 1 or Ring 2 classes).

Class 35   Young Handler – Child 11 years and under.  To be shown in hand.  Pony will require to be led correctly and presented to judge in halt, walk and trot.  Conformation and type of pony is not taken into account, although the pony must be suitable in size and temperament for the handler.  Prizes for all entrants.

Class 36   Young Handler – Child 12 – 16 years old.  To be shown in hand.  Pony will require to be led correctly and presented to judge in halt, walk and trot.  Conformation and type of pony is not taken into account, although the pony must be suitable in size and temperament for the handler.  Prizes for all entrants.

Class 37   Horse and Hound.  Ridden horse/pony, mare or gelding, four years old or over.  Dog to be on the lead and led by a separate person from the rider.  The class will be judged on the pairing of equine and canine.

CHAMPIONSHIP – To be judged from 1st prize winners in classes 26-37.

General Rules

  1. The organisers reserve the right to cancel, amalgamate and divide classes where necessary to facilitate the running of the event.
  2. No refunds will be given, except at the discretion of the organisers.
  3. The Judge’s decision will be final.
  4. INSURANCE: It is mandatory for anyone attending this event to have public liability (3rd party) insurance.  By entering you confirm that you hold appropriate public liability insurance.
  5. Anyone aged 17 years or under must be accompanied by an adult who takes full responsibility for their welfare and actions at all times while on site.
  6. Only those named at time of entry may ride or exhibit horses / ponies at the Show.
  7. It is the rider’s responsibility to ensure that when mounted they are wearing a hard hat conforming to current British Riding Clubs rules.
  8. Anyone using a mobile phone in the ring will be asked to leave immediately.
  9. Horses and Ponies must only be ridden at walk outwith warm-up or rings. Organisers will request the immediate removal of any animal not under control.  Stallions or colts must not be led or ridden by anyone under the age of 14.  Stallions must be identified by a red, white and blue ribbon in the tail.
  10. The ages of horses will be calculated from 1st January in the year in which they were foaled. All horses and ponies shown under saddle to be four years old or over. 
  11. All ponies shown in the Mountain and Moorland classes must be shown in accordance with the breed society’s regulations. The M&M classes are open to registered and non-registered animals.
  12. Exhibitors are required to withdraw from a class if the Judge has an interest in his/her exhibit (owned, trained, kept at livery, ridden in competition, financial interest or similar). This rule does not apply in Ring 3.
  13. Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times. Please scoop the poop.
  14. Put rubbish in bins provided and take away horse droppings from the parking area.
  15. Do NOT muck out horseboxes on site. Take droppings home.      Thank you.
  16. Any objections against the awards of the Judges (which on the merits of each exhibit shall be final – see Rule 3), or in regard to any matter connected with the Show, must be lodged in writing, with the Secretary, not later than 12 noon on the day following the Show. Each protest must be accompanied by a deposit of £25, and if not upheld the sum deposited may, at the discretion of the Committee, be forfeited to the Club.  All decisions of the Committee shall be final in determining the outcome.
